Your Values Aligned With A Network of Ideals Starts Here

In 1972, Lambda Chi Alpha became the first fraternity to abolish pledgeship and replaced it with Associate Membership. Lambda Chi Alpha believes in the value of every human being. These values, which were adopted from the United States Army, include Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Service & Stewardship, Honor, Integrity, and Personal courage, which come together to form the acronym LDRSHIP. Lambda Chi Alpha is in search of the type of student who already exemplifies these traits and is continually working to better himself as a man.

Associate Membership

In 1972, Lambda Chi Alpha became the first fraternity to abolish pledgeship and replaced it with Associate Membership. Lambda Chi Alpha believes in the value of every human being. This is reflected in our open motto, Vir Quisque Vir, translated means Every Man a Man. Associate Membership grants new members full rights of membership, including the right to vote and hold office. We believe that the Associate Member program create a sense of equality amongst its members which allows all members to become better men.

7 Core Values

Our fraternity’s values (which were adopted from the United States Military Academy, also known as West Point or U.S. Army) are Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Service & Stewardship,Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage, which come together to form the acronym LDRSHIP. Lambda Chi Alpha is in search of the type of student who already exemplifies these traits and is continually working to better himself as a leader and a man.

Feeding America

Lambda Chi Alpha is now a proud partner with Feeding America. Feeding America provided emergency food assistance to more than 37 million Americans in fiscal year 2012 and is ranked #4 in The 100 Largest U.S. Charities by Forbes.

Living our Values

Lambda Chi Alpha takes a progressive approach to Pre-Initiation and incorporating values based ritualism. We believe that ritualism has served an important purpose throughout history. Rituals help bring people together and to remind us all of important truths. Based on Christian Principles, our Initiation Ritual and Exoteric Mysteries are sure to offer you a fond appreciation of ritualism. This ritualism will help you see the strengths of a brotherhood when its at its highest and can help you understand more about yourself.

Focus on Growth

In most fraternities, the education process stops after a member is initiated. However, Lambda Chi Alpha has created the Inner Circle Journey, which allows Initiated Brothers to continue their growth through different experiences, reflections, and Ritualistic teachings. In Lambda Chi Alpha you will always be encouraged to grow and receive more out of your fraternity experience.

What is the Mentoring Academy?

It’s a dynamic new initiative of the Educational Foundation of Lambda Chi Alpha designed to bridge the worlds of alumni and collegians will gain real-world skills and knowledge they can use in personal and professional life after graduation.

You will explore a roadmap to success and significance built on Lambda Chi Alpha’s Seven Core Values. Most importantly, you will meet and work with experienced alumni from all walks of life who have agreed to serve as mentors committed to your success.

Cross & Crescent

Cross & Crescent (ISSN 1930-1278) is a monthly online magazine that includes Chapter News, TRUE Brother News, history and a feature or two about prominent or interesting alumni brothers. The Cross & Crescent is Lambda Chi Alpha’s flagship publication.

The Cross & Crescent is produced each month by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers. These folks work hard to publish a quality magazine each month, packaging it in both web and PDF-based formats. After 90 years as a printed publication, the Cross & Crescent became an online magazine on November 2, 2005. To learn more about this change, check out the article “Magazine Moves Online” or our frequently asked questions. A new issue of the Cross & Crescent magazine is published on the second day of each month (except January and August). If you would like to receive an email reminding you to return to this site each month, we created an opt-in list for you to subscribe to.

The Paedagogus

Paedagogus is a Latin word that comes from the Greek Paidagogos, meaning a male companion, or personal tutor, who accompanied young students to and from school and had charge of them at school — hence a male teacher or pedagogue. His obligation lay not merely in training the young mind but in guiding conduct and character. So today, the member of a fraternity is constantly influenced by the other members with whom he lives and spends most of his time at college.

The Paedagogos of ancient Greece was devoted to the development of the well-rounded personality in an atmosphere of friendliness. So, precisely, is the college fraternity of today. Because today the opportunity for honorable and courageous conduct is as great as at any time in history; we call this embodiment of our elementary teachings in fraternalism, the Paedagogus.

This book is provided to each member, associate and initiate, so answers may be obtained to questions pertaining to Lambda Chi Alpha. This book is not intended to be required reading or material for memorization by any individual. Rather, it is for the mutual benefit of all members so an understanding of Lambda Chi Alpha may be obtained through the undergraduate years and beyond.

The Paedagogus is a lifelong companion carrying memories of situations, the making of new friends, the fulfillment of dreams, the evolution of a personality nurtured by the light of youthful happiness, and the vision of brotherly idealism.

The Paedagogus is designed with the new member in mind, providing a keepsake introduction to the fraternal world. In addition to answering questions about chapter and General Fraternity operations, this book is designed to communicate the ideals and standards of Lambda Chi Alpha and to make known the basic expectations and responsibilities of membership as an associate, active member, and alumnus.

The Constitution and Statutory Code is Lambda Chi Alpha’s chief document that outlines all the fraternity rules. The words “associate member” and “associate membership” are listed a total of 134 times throughout the document. Below are some key points, taken directly out of the forty-second edition of the Constitution and Statutory Code that outline your rights as an Associate Member:

Definitions.

The High Pi, High Alpha, High Tau, and two Collegiate Brothers or Associate Members elected as at-large members in a manner to be defined in the Chapter bylaws shall constitute the Executive Committee. The Chapter shall also elect an alternate member who is authorized to exercise full voting privileges in the absence of any member of the committee, except with reference to the absence of the High Pi or High Alpha. The High Beta shall be an ex-officio member of the committee without a vote unless he has been elected as an at-large or alternate member, or is voting in the absence of the High Alpha.

Code 3-13. Quorum and Voting.
A majority of the Collegiate Brothers and Associate Members of a Chapter shall constitute a quorum, unless a greater number is provided for in the Chapter bylaws. There shall be no voting by proxy. Absentee ballots may be cast only in elections of Chapter officers and on candidates for initiation, and only in the manner provided by the Chapter bylaws.
Code 3-15. Status of Associate Members in Business Meetings.
Associate Members shall attend Chapter business meetings and shall have the right to vote on all matters except (i) on candidates for initiation, (ii) on termination of associate membership, or (iii) on matters concerned with the Initiation Ritual.

Code 4-3. Voting on Prospective Associate Members.
A vote on the association of a man to the Fraternity may be taken at any scheduled meeting, provided a quorum of both the Collegiate Brothers and Associate Members is present. A prospective Associate Member’s name must be proposed by one Collegiate Brother or Associate Member of the Chapter and seconded by another Collegiate Brother or Associate Member. The number of favorable votes necessary to accept a prospective Associate Member shall be determined by the Chapter in its Bylaws provided that no Chapter shall require less than 66 percent favorable vote nor more than 87 percent favorable vote of the Collegiate Brothers and Associate Members present and voting. The Chapter may set a minimum favorable vote as low as 51 percent on association if the institution so requires.

Code 4-4. Scholastic Requirements of Associate Membership and Initiation.
To be eligible for associate membership or initiation, a man must have been granted unconditional admission to the institution, unless he has completed one or more terms of college work in which case he must have achieved during the previous grading period a scholastic average that shall be determined by the Chapter in its Bylaws, but that shall not be less than a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, or the all-men’s average (if this information is available), whichever is the lesser, but in any event not less than the scholastic average required for graduation. In no case shall any Chapter be authorized to waive existing college or university requirements for association or initiation. The Grand High Zeta shall be empowered by petition to adjust academic requirements on certain campuses. To be eligible for association or initiation, each prospective Associate Member or candidate shall be required to authorize the college or university to inform the High Sigma whether or not that person’s scholastic average meets the requirements of this section.

Code 4-6. Termination of Associate Membership; Reassociation.

a. Associate Membership may be terminated at any time by a vote of the Collegiate Brothers present and voting, provided the action on such motion lies on the table for one week prior to termination. The number of votes necessary to continue Associate Membership shall be the same as the number required by the Chapter Bylaws to accept a candidate for initiation at the time of the final vote for initiation.
b. Associate Membership shall be terminated automatically if an Associate Member shall have failed for each of two successive semesters or three successive quarters to maintain the scholastic average required for graduation by the institution.
c. If not more than one regular initiation shall have been held during the 15-month period, the Associate Membership shall be terminated automatically upon the holding of the first regular initiation following the 15-month period of Associate Membership.
d. A former Associate Member who is reassociated shall be subject to all requirements of the Laws of the Fraternity and the Chapter, except that he shall not be required to pay the General Fraternity Associate Member Fee a second time. A former Associate Member who is reassociated must be approved for initiation in the manner prescribed in Code 4-9 of this Statutory Code following his reassociation, notwithstanding the fact that he may have been approved for initiation prior to being disassociated.

Code 4-7. Instruction of Associate Members and Initiates.
Each Chapter shall adopt a definitive program of study on the history, organization, administration, and ideals of Lambda Chi Alpha, minimum requirements for which shall be formulated under the direction of the Grand High Zeta. This course of study shall be provided for the particular benefit of Members.

Code 4-8. Hazing of Associate Members and Initiates.
Hazing Members shall not be permitted at any time, whether on or off Fraternity premises. Hazing is defined as any action taken or situation created intentionally to produce physical discomfort or mental discomfort by embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule.

Code 6-4. Official Associate Member Pin.

Why Join Lambda Chi?

In a very real sense, the Fraternity creates a family relationship among its members. It aims to bring together a group of young men who will be congenial, loyal, and helpful to one another during some of the best years of their lives-the college years. Thus Lambda Chi Alpha offers its members the nearest possible equivalent to home that can be found on the college campus, and these close ties often bind men in friendships for life.

Associate Membership (Pledging?)

In 1972 Lambda Chi Alpha replaced pledgeship with Associate Membership. Associate Members have the same rights as initiated brothers, and also the same responsibilities. This beats archaic system of "pledgeship" by fostering both a tightening of the brotherhood as a whole and increasing respect for the individuality of its members. We do not haze.  If someone attempts to haze you contact the National Headquarters so we can assist in taking legal action againt the violator!
